Business entities that plan to use a name other than their legal business name may need to register an assumed
name. Assumed name registration can take place at the state, local, or state and local levels of government.

Agency Fee: | $25 for LLCs and limited partnerships. Corporation fees are $25 + $100 for each county within New York City and $25 for each county outside of New York City. |
Is registration mandatory?: | Filing an assumed name registration is required for any person or entity intending to conduct business under a fictitious name. |
County Level Filing: | Sole-proprietorships, general partnerships, and limited liability partnerships file at the county level. All other entities file with the department of state. |
Does registration prevent others from using the name I choose?: | Registration of an assumed name does not offer name protection. |
