Registration requirements for Massachusetts business entities

Business entities that plan to use a name other than their legal business name may need to register an assumed name. Assumed name registration can take place at the state, local, or state and local levels of government. State specific registration information is available below.

Initial Application for Registration

Notes:
  • Assumed name registration is filed at the city or town level in Massachusetts.
  • Sole-proprietorships and partnerships are required to file a business certificate in each city where they have an office or place of business.
  • Corporations and LLCs are not specifically mentioned in the statute, but they may also be required to file a certificate.

Business certificate must be renewed every 4 years from the date of filing.
