Registration requirements for Maine business entities

Business entities that plan to use a name other than their legal business name may need to register an assumed name. Assumed name registration can take place at the state, local, or state and local levels of government. State specific registration information is available below.

$25 for nonprofits or $125 for all other entity types.

Is registration mandatory?:

Filing an assumed name registration is required for any person intending to conduct business under an assumed name. Corporations, LLCs, and other formally organized entities need to file when they use a name other than their true name.

County Level Filing:

Filing is not required at the county level, however, partnerships and sole-proprietorships may be required to file at the city level.

Notes:
  • Maine uses the term "fictitious name" to describe an alternate name that is used when the entity's true name is unavailable.
  • File a termination form to no longer use an assumed name.
  • Publication of registration is not required in Maine.
