Registration requirements for Florida business entities

Business entities that plan to use a name other than their legal business name may need to register an assumed name. Assumed name registration can take place at the state, local, or state and local levels of government. State specific registration information is available below.

Initial Application for Registration

$50 (There is an additional $30 fee for a certified copy of fictitious name registration and an additional $10 fee for a certificate of status)

Is registration mandatory?:

Business entities operating under a name other than their legal name must file a fictitious name registration.

Florida Statutes § 865.09

County Level Filing:

Filing is not required at the county level.

Does registration prevent others from using the name I choose?:

Fictitious name registration serves only to inform the public and does not prevent another organization from using the same name.

Notes:
  • Search the online records prior to filing to ensure that the name you choose is distinguishable.
  • You will receive a confirmation letter by email or mail after your registration is processed.
  • The registered fictitious name must be published in a newspaper at least once within the county where your principal place of business is located.
