Harbor Compliance and National Council of Nonprofits Help Nonprofits with Fundraising Registration Compliance

New Publication Provides Information on State Registration Requirements for Fundraising

Harbor Compliance and the National Council of Nonprofits (Council of Nonprofits) announced a “Best Practices Partnership” and unveiled a resource guide to help nonprofits with often-misunderstood state fundraising registration requirements.

Forty-one states have some registration requirement for nonprofits that are soliciting contributions. Many nonprofits don’t realize that registration and reporting are necessary outside of their home state. Harbor Compliance and the Council of Nonprofits have partnered to create this new publication that will help nonprofits stay in compliance.

The new resource, Charitable Solicitation Compliance: An explanation of state charitable registration requirements, is available for anyone to download, free-of-charge. The guide includes information on common forms of fundraising that may require registration, an explanation of registration forms and processes, potential penalties for noncompliance, tips on how to decide where to register, and information on exemptions, renewal requirements, extensions, disclosure statements, and more.

“We’ve been impressed by Harbor Compliance’s commitment to helping nonprofits navigate the confusing and often outdated state registration requirements,” said Jennifer Chandler, Vice President of the National Council of Nonprofits. “We hope this new resource will help nonprofits comply with existing law and further the conversation to update and streamline these requirements in the near future.”

“As we work to help nonprofits comply with the maze of charitable solicitation laws across the country, the National Council of Nonprofits and its extensive network of nonprofits made for natural partners,” noted Mike Montali, CEO of Harbor Compliance. “The new guide and ongoing relationship with the Council of Nonprofits will make sure nonprofits nationwide have access to information that will help them advance their missions.”
